Crazy British Counties

The list of counties for UK schools in the new LJ school system is really wacky. No-one in the UK uses those crazy abbreviations. Here's a much better list of English “provinces” to be starting from:

  • Avon
  • Bedfordshire
  • Berkshire
  • Buckinghamshire
  • Cambridgeshire
  • Cheshire
  • Cleveland
  • Cornwall
  • County Durham
  • Cumbria
  • Derbyshire
  • Devon
  • East Sussex
  • Essex
  • Gloucestershire
  • Greater London
  • Hampshire
  • Herefordshire
  • Hertfordshire
  • Isle of Wight
  • Lancashire
  • Leicestershire
  • Lincolnshire
  • Merseyside
  • Norfolk
  • North Humberside
  • North Yorkshire
  • Northamptonshire
  • Northumberland
  • Nottinghamshire
  • Oxfordshire
  • Shropshire
  • Somerset
  • South Humberside
  • South Yorkshire
  • Staffordshire
  • Suffolk
  • Surrey
  • Tyne and Wear
  • Warwickshire
  • West Midlands
  • West Sussex
  • West Yorkshire
  • Wiltshire
  • Worcestershire

These are (roughly) England's old postal counties, which most people use in addresses and thus most people work in terms of these regions. This only covers England, of course. I'm not familiar with the counties in Wales, Scotland and Ireland, but I think it's probably best to split the UK up into its constituent countries for the purposes of the schools system anyway, since there are lots of counties per country. Within each county there's a bunch of towns and cities, but I shall not list them all here, mostly because I don't know any county apart from the one I live in. It's probably best to list London in terms of its boroughs rather than its towns, since people are more familiar with these.

That data certainly needs to be better. I know my university is in there somewhere because I saw it in the source data, but I can't find it in the listings. I can help out with Essex and some of London if needed. Hopefully other people can deal with the rest. ;) The BBC's league tables can function as a directory to find out which county and town each school belongs in, too.
