LJ and Digest-Auth

I really don't know the answer at all, so I'm going to point him here. Posted from an email I got from milchi,

* Martin Michlmayr <tbm@cyrius.com> [2005-05-26 13:22]:
Hey Jay,

I hope you have a moment. According to
http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=149
LJ supports Digest Auth. I tried something like
http://milchi:xxx@www.livejournal.com/users/milchi/data/atom?auth=digest
in Mozilla and it works. However, it doesn't work with wget and
Python's urlllib2. I tested more and found that lynx and links also
don't work while w3m do work.

My question now is whether LJ's Digest Auth is broken, slightly
now-standard or uses fancy features or whether those programs are at
fault? I'd really like to get Python to log in at LJ so I can read my
stuff via rss2email.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
