Wikipedia accepts the queries, kills the slow ones and uses a high enough connection limit (with higher tolerance for slow responses than LJ) to allow several hundred queries to accumulate during a long one or few. Any unusually long ones get killed with Querybane, based on server load and run time at the time the query is happening.
