I'm a dabbler rather than a professional programmer. I have a basic command of Java, Pascal, HTML, and NWN scripting language but haven't worked with Perl before. Before I dive in, I'd like to get some advice on the feasibility of the project I have in mind.

I'd like to use LJ to host a large scale text-based role playing game that uses character statistics to modify custom friend groups. The idea here is that some accounts would be able to spy upon others based off of newly defined variables. Ideally, there would also be some sort of notification that a post is visible due solely to this effect.

I assume this would have to be run on its own server. And, of coarse, players would be informed of these code changes before being allowed to join. But what other hurdles are there?

If this is feasible, any help and/or pointers on the project would be enormously appreciated.
