Comment Counts

Hey, is there a way to read in how many comments have been posted on a user's journal? I thought it might be interesting to write a program that could check for that. This way, a user can tell if there are new comments on his/her journal without having to look over each entry, or sign up for e-mailing of new comments. Is there a tag that can be read in?
