mail sucks

Postfix is eating mail for breakfast. Okay... maybe not eating it... but storing it in its cheeks for later.

We have about 14000 deferred messages, currently... and this number is growing. About 95% of the messages are deferred due to timeouts during SMTP handshake.

Do any of you know anything about postfix? Please. Or perhaps you have experience with reasons behind massive amounts of deferred messages.

I am able to communicate on port 25 of the "problem" mail hosts with no problems. This leads me to believe that it is a postfix specific problem. The machine runs FreeBSD, which may or may not be configured 100% properly.

I am able to send messages through the server (i.e. to user@livejournal.com) and post to replies... and in all of my tests... the messages flew through. I cannot reproduce the problem.

In addition... we are thinking of switching away from postfix. Any suggestions?
