The apache servers at lj.com are all running FreeBSD, right? It's the DB servers that have the RAID arrays, running Debian.

Yes, this has some relevance. ;-)

I'm thinking of implementing some way of dealing with pre-formatted HTML comments in text-only comment notifications. (Currently, they show up as one big ugly block of text with tags inline.) Lynx can do this with the -dump and -nolist options, as can a proggie I've run across called html2txt. Perl can do it too, I'm sure (well, of course it can.)

Either way would create some kind of new dependency for LiveJournal. So which do you think is better, to call some precompiled app written in C from perl, or to write the thing in perl itself? I think the first would be faster, but it's a bit messier, and I've been wrong before. :-).
