by way of introduction... [Dec. 12th, 2001|04:08 am]
LiveJournal Development
[mood |sleepless]

hello all, my name's james, I've been using live journal for all of a week :-) , but I've been manually doing a similar thing for about a year and finding out that it was open-source swung it for me.

I develop phone applications for a living, so I imagine I will look at doing/contributing to a wap/sms - based client . I also wrote an nntp server for ezboard, and I'm toying with the idea of doing a similar thing for the commentage. (not that I dislike the web-based version, but I *like* newsgroups.) I haven't looked at the commenting code though, so this mght be utterly impractical :-)

Good to make your acquaintance, all. :-)

Opera 6 HTML E-Mail [Dec. 12th, 2001|08:52 pm]
LiveJournal Development

Opera 6 seems to be handling its HTML e-mail a little differently, and this is affecting how user comments are received in e-mail. See this support request for details.

We've suggested he switch to text e-mail for now, but is there a fix that can be implemented for this?

user-Interest searching [Dec. 12th, 2001|09:12 pm]
LiveJournal Development

LiveJournal is my first SQL experience so I'm no DB expert, but I think I have a way to fix user-interest searching to allow multiple search terms and interest-matching between users without killing the site.

First let me say that interest-matching between users and searching by multiple interests is pretty much the same thing. The only difference is that most searches entered by users will have 2 or 3 keywords where user-interest matching looks at all the interests a user has. Both these problems can be addressed as one.
Here is my idea...Collapse )

If you look at a Free Users (but not you) friends view, whilst you're logged in as a Paid User, do you still hit the fast servers?

Clustering LiveJournal [Dec. 12th, 2001|11:05 pm]
LiveJournal Development

I wrote up my plans for scaling LiveJournal into infinity and beyond. Read it:
Ask questions. (but only after you read it all, please) I can't wait to get started on this. I can't wait to have the site kick ass forever.
