Database mirrors

With the new harddrives, we now have a replicated MySQL database running on Kenny. I started it with a snapshot from a few weeks ago so it'll take it a few hours to get caught up with all the updates.

Once it does, though .... ooooooh shit. It's gonna be fun. Much of the code will then be able to select from the database mirror and give cartman a little break. (not that Cartman needs much of a break right now... it's totally chillin' now with its second processor and 2 gig of memory)

Also, though... this'll mean we can put the directory back up, having it beat up the slave database. If you've been off planet for awhile, a quick history: the reason the directory went down was because it was causing MySQL to segfault. Maybe that bug has been fixed by now, but I'm not willing to run the directory on the main database if it might still exist. Database crashes are the worst ... totally kills the cache, taking the site down for an hour or so while it recovers.

Oh, we also have a new beefy machine coming that'll be another database mirror.... we're throwing around the idea of doing full text searches on that one for paid users. We'll see how well MySQL's full text indexing is before making any promises.

Pepys AWT, and pepys_dev

Two announcements:
  • Gordon has a working version of an AWT user interface for the Pepys client. This UI should work with any browser that supports Java (that is, it doesn't need the Java Plug-in, just standard Java support). You can have a look at it at here.

  • I've started a pepys_dev community to discuss (rather unsurprisingly) the development of Pepys. We'll post minor update news and such there, and you can post suggestions or whatever as well.

replication status

kenny is 15.3% caught up with changes.
277 mb out of 1.8 gb.

I knew this was going to take awhile, but taking down cartman to do a more recent snapshot was just too painful.

The primary reason I'm excited about the database mirrors is that it'll let us take database snapshots easily, without taking down the main one. (hooray for backups!)

Calendar Subjects buglet

Hi All,

I just noticed the entry for "subjects" on the Calendar view. I may have also noticed a small buglet.

Go here first.

You'll note on the 9th April, the entry @ 11:58a appears *after* the entry for 12:57a (if you don't see it, trust me, it's there)

Same with the 27th, the entries @ 11:40a and 4:38p appear after the entry for 6:10p.

I thought that it might be to do with editing the entry, but I haven't edited any entries today.

I also note it's not in the source code as at 4th April so I can't check to see what it's doing.

Is this a bug? Feature? Am I just blind?

Anyway, I shall go back to lurking now :-)
